Today was spent walking around the city. We saw Hallgrimskirkja church, which is very plain inside, but has immense concrete columns on the outside, starting from short ones on the ends, increasing in size until the very tallest in the centre. We took the elevator to the top and had a great view of the city. Most of the buildings are short - about three stories. Only a few, probably apartments, are tall. Many houses are multicoloured, or white with coloured roofs.
Next we toured the Iceland Phallological (penis) museum, the only one in the world. It had many specimens, many of them such as the whale's, were very large. It was amusing to see things made in the shape of penises, including jewelry, utensils, salt and pepper shakers, and even a tie made from foreskin! It had silver castings of each member of the Icelandic handball team, and one human sample from the museum's previous owner who recently passed away.
We did a lot of shopping, finding some gifts for the family, as well as a warm fleece sweater for me, which I was happy to have when we walked down to the harbour. We saw Harpa, a new concert hall with convex and concave panels that sparkle at night.
Had a wonderful East Indian dinner. The waiter (perhaps the owner?) seemed to enjoy chatting with the customers. When he saw that one lady was eating slowly, he asked her if she wasn't enjoying her meal, and offered to make her something else if she didn't. He told her that it was more important that she enjoy her meal than he lose money by preparing her another dish!
